Mission Employability IV: Medical Research Careers - Building Connections

The North Superior Workforce Planning Board, in partnership with the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute, and Passport to Prosperity, hosted its fourth successful Mission Employability Forum - Medical Research Building Connections. This year's Forum focused on the medical research sector and the emerging opportunities happening right here in Thunder Bay! The evening began with a keynote address from Dr. Alison Symington, Executive Director of Bioscience Education Canada, who spoke about the wide range of careers in science and the hands-on opportunities that exist for high school students within industry. A panel of medical research representatives, which included Genesis Genomics, Lake Superior Centre for Regenerative Medicine, Inc., the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute, and the newest company to open its doors in Thunder Bay, Tornado Medical Systems, shared their exciting new ventures within their respective companies.  Following the panel presentations, delegates proceeded with roundtable discussions to explore how science benefits our community, what essential skills are required for careers in the medical research sector, and what innovative things can be done so that students, parents, and teachers are more aware of the incredible opportunities within this sector.
